Winter blahs

All the cold weather and blowing snow takes me back to days of yore. A time when cold weather riding (for those of us less trainer-inclined) consisted of the best thick socks you could find, a couple of grocery store plastic bags, and if you were lucky, a pair of Nashbar neoprene booties! The fine Champion Systems thermal jackets we have now were but a blip in the mind of some poor sap who, like me, probably wore about 4 layers of shirts – not base layers – under a cycling jersey and whatever running jacket could be found. Gloves? Ha! It’s really unbelievable that we didn’t freeze off a few digits, or more, back then.

Run for Regis

Apparently some people are motivated to get off the couch this time of year. Rumor has it Mr Rood logged over 101 miles in the first week of the new year. Nice work! Others were up to big things as well. Here is Jen Petkovsek’s report from the Run for Regis…

“Late fall there was talk of this “Run for Regis” trail race on January 15th. That’s my birthday! So of course I thought it’d be a good idea to sign up! I was able to talk Brandy into signing up too! We had heard this was incredibly tough but also very laid back. We went into it as a fun training run. The morning started off very cold-like 10 degrees! A group of 4 of us stayed together and chatted and helped one another move along. It was gorgeous! Definitely the slowest half marathon I’ve done but it was on snowy trails with great friends and one heck of a fun run!”

The first big race of the year…the race to the altar…its official, SSSMST legend Tim Walsh is off the market (sorry ladies) and 2012 is here! Congrats to Tim & Kim! The new year was rung in with the annual CTC polar plunge. On Sunday, Team Spin will host the Cross My Heart and Hope to Die Willoughby Cyclocross Spectacular. Held at Todd Field in Willoughby, this race always has unexpected obstacles. Come out and see what this year holds!

Running and More Running

On Saturday two 5k’s can be found locally, the Westhaven Run for Shelter and the Wishbone Run and Doggie Dash. The proceeds of the Westhaven race benefit …..(I’m sure you can’t guess it)….the Westhaven Shelter. Show up at Edgewater and run for a great cause. In Euclid you can take your pooch and try your hand at the 1.5 Mile doggie dash. If that’s not enough, just run the 5k too! Before packing up the pooch, please go to http://www.hmapromotions.net/races/wishbone.html to make sure your dog can adhere to the race and city ordinances.

Racing off road? The time to do that is Sunday. With Solon CX, two trail marathons and a 5 Mile cross country race, your choices are endless. Just hop on the nearest trail and spin your legs.

On the horizon (next week) is the Willoughby CX race. Hopefully this one won’t be water logged. Have a look at the flyer below.

Blue Sky…..or Not

This weekend is the 2nd annual Blue Sky (or Not) CX race. Hopefully the blue skies will prevail and the clouds will finally go away. This CX race will have music, on-site food vendors and FREE beer.

On Saturday, the City of Painesville is hosting a Fall Fest at Veteran’s park. At the park, there will be trunk or treating, a lightbulb exchange, a costume parade/contest, food and much, much more. In conjunction with the Fall Fest is the Run for the Parks 5k. Make your way to Painesville for a full day of activity. On Sunday, the Dyslexia Dash will be run in Sagamore Hills. They have a unique category called the prediction run. The top ten people who race closest to their predicted time will receive awards.

Willoughby CX Cancelled

The Willoughby cyclocross race slated for tomorrow is cancelled due to flood like conditions at Todd field. Team Spin race organizers feel they currently can not set up a reasonable and safe course that won’t result in the destruction of the park. Sorry for the late notice and inconvenience.

Cross My Heart and Hope to Die

On Sunday, Team Spin will host “Cross My Heart and Hope to Die Willoughby Cyclocross Spectacular.” The course, infamous for its hill climb and spiral of death, will be muddier and even more relentless this year due to all the rain. The day begins at 11:45 with the C race and culminates with the A race at 2:00. Go to Team Spin for up to date race information.

The last race of the NEO power series will be held on Saturday at Vulture’s Knob. The day is packed full of events……a pumpkin carving contest, bon fire, DJ MadNote and, of course, the race. This will all be followed on Sunday with a Downhill Race.

Going for Gold

This weekend Sandusky will be the home of the Cedar Point Rev 3 Triathlon. Not only is it sweet to be able to participate in such an event; it’s even sweeter to have one so close to home. With pros like Pedro Gomez, Chris McDonald and SSSMST’s very own Jim Lamastra participating in the full rev, the competition will be fierce. On top of that, the $16,000 purse will push everyone to their limit. Whether you plan to race, volunteer or cheer your presence at the race is valued. Also this weekend, one very talented teammate, Brian Stern, will travel to Las Vegas to compete in the Ironman 70.3 World Championships. Over 1,800 domestic and international athletes have earned the right to compete at the race. (That’s right, you have to qualify to start!) In other news, Jackson Rood, an upcoming SSSMST superstar, participated in his goal race for the 2011 season…. the 1/4 Mile Kids race at The North Coast Challenge. After getting pummeled to the ground at the start, Jackson was able to get back on his feet and finish strong. Luckily, we were able to catch Jackson at the finish and ask him a few questions.

Interviewer: Wow, Jackson, you really ran well. What a nice way to culminate the 2011 season. How do you feel about your race?

Jackson: I felt really good. This year, I was able to train through the winter so I felt much stronger later in the season. Despite the rough start, I still managed to get my medal!

Interviewer: What are your racing plans now?

Jackson: I will make my cyclocross debut next week at Spin’s Wendy Park race. I have been riding my bike much more the past few weeks and plan to practice barriers this week.

Interviewer: What motivates you to train?

Jackson: My little brother Noah! I can’t let him win!

Manatoc, North Coast and Oktoberfest

This weekend Camp Manatoc, a boy scout camp in the Cuyahoga Valley, opens its trails to host the Manatoc Experience. Allowing in the public only one time a year, the weekend is packed with events….trail running race, cross race, mountain bike race, kids races, bike demos, vendors and much, much more. **There is a $5 fee per rider to enter Camp Manatoc. Non-riders are free. **

A slew of 5 Mile, 4 Mile and 5k races are also occurring around town. On Saturday, the 21st annual North Coast Challenge 5 Miler will begin at Crocker Park. The event is a celebration of Westlake and the proceeds are given to various charity organizations. One of our very own mini SSSMSTers, Jackson Rood, will put his training to the test as he makes a debut appearance in the kids race. We wish him the best of luck!

The Cleveland Labor Day Oktoberfest fest is taking place at the Cuyahoga County Fair Grounds from Saturday to Monday. With food, live music and a 5k, everyone will be occupied. Go to www.clevelandoktoberfest.com for complete event information.
