Jim LaMastra
Hometown: Rocky River by way of Eden, NY
Occupation: Physical Therapist/Consultant
Number of years racing: 10
Favorite race: IM Hawaii
Goal races for 2010: A few 70.3s, including (possibly) Rhode Island and Steelhead, Rev3 Cedar Point Full
Why do you race triathlons? To stay motivated to exercise
What got you into the sport? I wanted to lose weight and triathlons gave me a goal
Favorite thing about training? The solitude
Favorite part about racing? The adrenaline high
Favorite key workout that builds your confidence? The long brick at peak IM training may include a 6 hour ride followed by a 1 hour run. When I nail that run without bonking, I know I’m ready.
Advice to new multisport athletes: Make sure everything is fun. About 3-4 years ago I got into a rut and felt like I needed to train. Only in the last 2 years have I remembered what is so great about this stuff. There are obviously workouts we need to do to be successful. However, as soon as you force yourself to do them, they become mentally draining. Training should be the opposite. It should be mentally boosting to train and race, no matter how good or bad the day may be physically.
