Results Rehash – Driving far to go long.

IMfinish
As mentioned in our previous post, multisport racing in NE Ohio is done for the 2010 season, and the only way to get your fix is to drive somewhere far away. So, that’s exactly what Brain Kostura and Jim Lamastra did!

Having visited the 70.3 World Championships in Clearwater Florida before, and considering it one of the best race experiences he’s ever had, Jim showed up in Syracuse for a 70.3 qualifier hoping to punch another ticket to the “little” Big Dance in November.

Brain, attempting his second Ironman, had slightly more modest (but no less difficult) goal of setting a new PR over the full 140.6 mile distance in Madison, WI; despite the more difficult bike course.

Results Rehash – Winner! Winner! Beer for dinner!

Photobucket

If you ever go and participate (or spectate) at a local athletic event and ask around, chances are you will hear dozens of reasons why the people toeing the line choose to compete. It could be a bet between friends, a personal test scored as a pass/fail exam, or the celebration of a life changing decision to live an active lifestyle. For some though, they want to win. They want to measure themselves against their contemporaries and come out on top. Winning can be a lot of things, but often it’s one thing above all others…..fun!

Last weekend saw SSSMST participate in three separate events, and go three for three overall. On Saturday Mike Schaefer bagged his first win at the Findley Lake Triathlon; a venue he returns to year after year and has come close to winning in the past. Rob Thompson continued his focus on bike racing and managed to win the CAT 3/4 race in Zoar, Ohio. While Jim Lamastra maintained his perfect record for 2010 by winning the Greater Cleveland Triathlon.

Any weekend with this many races is a treat, and to have SSSMST on top of 3 podiums is sweet indeed! Brian Stern turned in a solid top 10 result at the GCT, while Patrick Kolozvary found himself 5 miles off course on the bike and turned the race into a solid training day.

Read on for some race reports.

Results Rehash – Huntington! Speedos! And Jim’s unlikely triumph.

IMG_5261It’s the biggest little race on the calendar, and about as close to a home game as SSSMST gets. As such, you always see a lot of blue and green jerseys both on course, and volunteering. The atmosphere is fun, light, and at times scantily clad.

For the second year in a row, SSSMST took the overall win (Jim Lamastra) as well as several age-group wins (Marty Mason, Joe Bush, Jen Petkovsek).

Jim, the unlikely hero, has been recovering from a nasty bike accident a few months ago and wasn’t able to even swim properly as he toed the line on Sunday morning. It mattered not though as he side-stroked, kicked, and doggy paddled his way to T1. Once there he opened up a killer bike/run combo to dethrone defending champ (and fellow SSSMST teammate) Brian Stern (3rd OA).

Others were not as lucky with Leah Halloran and Rob Thompson flatting on course, while Andy Cornwell continued to showcase his excellent recent bike handling skills and crashed (but walked it off to finish respectably).  Still, SSSMST took 10 of the top 17 places.

Marty Mason did it old school in his speedo, along with another Spin Bike Shop sponsored triathlete AJ Baucco. It was….well….it was definitely something seeing that pair out on course. We’ll leave it up to the spectators to  decide what, exactly, it was.

Rob in Pain

Spin – Second Sole had a lot of people out and about this weekend, between the many events at the Cleveland Marathon and a classic road race down in Brecksville.

The short version is that we had some fast finishes, some OTB finishes, and several team members took the day to give back to the community.

Bonus Results Rehash on Wednesday, too!
