recent results: ironman lake placid, usat duathlon national championships and fairport harbor

Spin/Second Sole team member John Willse demonstrated the effectiveness of a new taper strategy by going under 11 hours in the Ford Ironman USA Lake Placid! The taper works like this: After six months of endless bike and run miles, check in to a hospital with severe abdominal pain one week before the race. Spend a night or two. When you’re sure that there’s really no way you can do an Ironman race the next weekend, check out and head straight to the venue. John demonstrated this tactic to fantastic success, finishing the swim with a PR of 1:01 before rushing through the hilly bike course in 5:33. His marathon time was 4:09, for a total race time of 10:54. This made him the 173rd finisher of 2208, 38th in his age group.

The team was represented at USAT Duathlon Short Course National Championships by Scott Zubricky, who came in with a very respectable 11th place age-group finish. Scott described the bike as “the toughest ride I have ever done.” His total time was 2:19. Congrats on a great race!

Also last weekend, Jim Lamastra, Andrea Lamastra, Kevin Krol, and Joe Bush trekked out to Fairport Harbor for the Lighthouse Triathlon. This short race was very well run and well attended. Jim won overall, and Andrea placed 2nd in the women’s race. Kevin Krol and Joe Bush were 1st and 2nd in their age group. Nice showing!
