Alan’s Elite Race is part of HFP Racing’s Akron Triathlon Festival. It is in memory of the late Alan Boos, a local triathlete. This year, in addition to being marked with “4.A.B” on their arms, all the competitors had “4.D.K” in honor of Darryl Kollai.
The race format is unique: Three separate races, run back-to-back. Each racer’s total time is added to determine the overall champ. The race course is short and tight, and makes for a great spectator event.
Jim led the swim in all three races, increasing his gap with each race. The bike course was challenging because of the small hills and constant accelerating, but he never lost a place on the bike, although he was closely followed by the state’s top racers, including Shannon Kurek, and Scott Myers. Even with a good gap coming out of T2, Jim’s lead in each race was eaten up by Scott Myers’ effortless running, although it was always close.
At the end of the day, Scott’s powerful run earned him the top honors, with Jim a close second. Shannon was third. The top five racers were separated by less than three minutes in total time.
