Racing with the boys from Team Spin, Mike Schaefer lit up the final RATL on Saturday. He sprinted for all the primes– winning one– and taking 4th overall on a windy day.

His understandably psyched race report:

Strong winds kept the pack together today. I was feeling good so I went for the first prime and scored $10 by nipping a guy at the line as he sat up thinking he’d won – that felt really great, and legs still felt lively (nothing like success to make you feel good).

I set myself up well for the next 2 primes, but each time I got suprised by a fast move from behind as the approaching pace was too slow, and the uphill finish made it hard for me to accelerate in response.

Fortunately the pace on the final lap was fast at around 30mph, but I set up a bit too far back ~8th place thinking I’d be able to cover the gap like I did on the first prime. I hesitated a bit too long before really kicking it, so ran out of time to close the deal at the finish — but overall was happy with the 4th place, and the winnings were enough to cover the entry fee and gas! Will definitely be back next year!
